What retrofit means
Retrofit simply means adding insulation to a home that is already built. For us, that is Knauf batts in the ceiling and Mammoth under a raised timber floor.
Older homes often have something in place already. Before we quote, we look at what is there. Insulation that is dry, secure and in good condition may be kept or topped up, while wet, damaged or poorly installed insulation may need removing. An inspection shows which.
If the ceiling has old loose-fill Insulfluff, we remove it before the new insulation goes in. If the subfloor needs it, we fit a ground moisture barrier at the same time.
Quality products. Quick, tidy installs.
We use Knauf batts in ceilings and Mammoth in underfloors. Typical install times and guide prices for a 100m² home:
- Ceiling
- Knauf batts
- Typically 1 to 3 hours. From $1,600 to $2,000 for a 100m² home.
- Underfloor
- Mammoth
- Typically 1 day for a 100m² home. From $2,200 to $2,500 for a 100m² home.
Prices are a guide. Your quote depends on access and materials.
Who retrofit suits
Retrofit is for homes that are already standing and could be warmer.
- Older homes with cold rooms and cold floors.
- Homes with old, settled or damaged insulation.
- Ceilings that still have old Insulfluff in them.
- Raised timber floors that are uninsulated or damp underneath.
- Businesses and schools with an existing building to upgrade.
- Landlords: we can help with the insulation your rental needs and arrange a Healthy Homes assessment for you.
How a retrofit job works
Free consultation and assessment
We check what insulation you already have and what condition it is in. Most assessments are done through our online system, and we come out in person for more complicated homes or on request.
A clear, detailed quote
You get a clear, detailed quote with no hidden fees, covering the ceiling, the underfloor, or both, plus any removal or moisture barrier work.
Prepare and install
We agree a start date and timeline that suit you. Any old Insulfluff comes out first, then the new insulation and any ground moisture barrier go in, with disruption kept low.
Final quality check
We finish with a comprehensive quality check of the ceiling and underfloor work before we hand it back to you.

Retrofit insulation: common questions
Can't see your question? Give us a call.
What does retrofit insulation cost?
As a guide, ceiling insulation is $1,600 to $2,000 and underfloor insulation is $2,200 to $2,500, each for a 100m² home. Your quote depends on access and materials, and covers any removal or moisture barrier work.
Can I have the ceiling and underfloor done together?
Yes. We can quote the ceiling, the underfloor, or both together, and agree a start date and timeline that suit you.
Will you remove my old insulation?
Only if it needs to go. If it is wet, damaged or poorly installed, it may need removing. Old Insulfluff is taken out before the new insulation goes in.
Can you help get my rental ready for Healthy Homes?
We can help with the insulation your rental needs and arrange a Healthy Homes assessment for you. Call us to talk it through.
Do you retrofit homes in Gisborne and the East Coast?
Yes. Gisborne is where we started and we still do plenty of work there, as well as in the Bay of Plenty, the Coromandel and Hauraki, and Rotorua.
