Why ceiling insulation is the best first upgrade in Tauranga

If your home feels cold even with the heater on, the problem may be above you. For most Tauranga and Bay of Plenty homes, ceiling insulation is the sensible first upgrade: it is quick to install, it tackles both cold and damp, and it is the right foundation for anything you do afterwards.

Why start with the ceiling

Warm air rises. In a home with thin, patchy or no ceiling insulation, the warmth you have paid for drifts up into the roof space and out. Adding ceiling insulation slows that down, so your heating does not have to work as hard to keep rooms comfortable.

In our part of the world there is a second reason. The Bay of Plenty is mild but humid, and the coastal air carries a lot of moisture. A cold ceiling is a place where that moisture condenses, which is where musty smells and ceiling mould often start. A properly insulated ceiling stays closer to room temperature, which can help reduce condensation. It is not the only factor, because ventilation and everyday moisture matter too, but it is a large one.

Ceiling insulation is also quick. Most ceilings take 1 to 3 hours, so you are not giving up a day, or a weekend, to get it done.

What we look at during the assessment

Every home is different. When we assess a ceiling we look at:

  • What insulation is already there, how much, and what condition it is in.
  • Gaps, compressed or displaced material, and any signs of moisture.
  • Access to the roof space, and anything that gets in the way, such as wiring, downlights and ducting.
  • Whether old loose fill needs removing first. We can remove Insulfluff before new insulation goes in.

Most assessments are done through our online system. For complicated homes, or if you would simply prefer it, we can come out and look in person.

What we install

For retrofit ceilings we use Knauf batts. They are a well-known product, and a batt that is cut and fitted properly does the job without gaps or squashed sections. We will explain what we recommend for your roof space, and why. You can read more on our ceiling insulation page.

What does it cost?

As a guide, ceiling insulation for a 100m² home runs from $1,600 to $2,000. Your quote depends on access and materials, so the best way to know is to ask. Our quotes are clear and detailed, with no hidden fees.

Why use a professional

DIY can look cheaper at first, but a ceiling is easy to get wrong. Common problems are:

  • Gaps and compressed batts that leave cold spots.
  • Insulation pushed up against things it should be kept clear of, such as downlights that are not designed to be covered.
  • Blocked roof vents, which stop moisture escaping.
  • A rushed job in a hot, cramped roof space.

We are licensed and insured, and our team knows the roof spaces of homes across Tauranga, Mount Maunganui, Papamoa and Katikati.

A quick checklist: is it time to look?

  • Do your rooms feel cold at ceiling height, or is the upstairs colder than the rest of the house?
  • Can you see condensation or mould on ceilings in winter?
  • Is the insulation in your roof space thin, patchy, squashed or damp?
  • Do you know what is up there at all?

If you answered yes to any of these, or “I don’t know” to the last one, it is worth having a look. For homes with cold floors, our underfloor insulation is the next step, and our post on why underfloor insulation matters explains why.
