How to choose an insulation installer

Insulation sits out of sight, so you can’t easily judge the work once it is done. That makes the choice of installer matter more than it first seems. Here is a simple way to compare your options, whoever you end up using.

Start with the basics

Before you compare prices, check the fundamentals.

  • Are they licensed and insured? Ask, and expect a straight answer. If something goes wrong in your home, you want to know the installer is covered.
  • Do they do the work themselves or subcontract it? Neither is automatically bad, but you should know who will turn up at your door.
  • Do they work in your area? Travel affects scheduling and sometimes price.
  • Do they specialise in insulation? A business that does one thing all day tends to do it well.

What a good quote looks like

A quote should be easy to read and easy to compare with others. Look for:

  • What is being installed and in which parts of the house.
  • The material and brand, so you can compare like with like.
  • The price, with no unexplained extras.
  • What the price depends on, such as access.
  • When the work can be done and roughly how long it takes.

Be cautious of anything vague, or any quote that arrives with pressure to decide on the spot. A good installer is happy for you to think it over.

Questions worth asking

You do not need a long list. These cover most of it:

  1. What do you recommend for my home, and why?
  2. Will I get the quote in writing, and does it include everything?
  3. How long will the job take?
  4. Is there anything I need to do beforehand?
  5. Will you check the old insulation, moisture or access problems first?
  6. What happens if something is not right afterwards?

The last one tells you a lot. At Coastline our answer is simple: “If you’re not satisfied, we’re not finished.”

If you are insulating a rental

The Healthy Homes standards set minimum requirements for rental homes, including ceiling and underfloor insulation, and it is worth reading the official guidance at tenancy.govt.nz before you book anyone. We can help with the insulation your rental needs and arrange a Healthy Homes assessment for you.

Price is only part of it

The cheapest quote is not always the best one. Gaps, squashed batts or missed corners are hard to see but make a real difference to how the insulation performs. A quality check at the end of the job is a good sign.

For a rough idea of cost, ceiling insulation for a 100m² home is usually $1,600 to $2,000 and underfloor is usually $2,200 to $2,500. Your quote depends on access and materials.
